Dyslexia Awareness Month

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on the unique strengths, challenges, and needs of individuals with dyslexia. For many students, dyslexia is more than just a reading difficulty; it’s a different way of processing language that requires specific instruction and understanding.

At Growing Through Dyslexia, we believe that awareness is the first step toward empowerment. When parents, educators, and communities understand what dyslexia truly is, we can replace frustration and misunderstanding with effective strategies and genuine support.

What Dyslexia Is—and Isn’t

Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects reading, spelling, and writing. It is not a sign of low intelligence or lack of effort. In fact, many individuals with dyslexia are highly creative, analytical thinkers who excel when taught using structured, evidence-based approaches.

Why Awareness Matters

Too often, students with dyslexia go undiagnosed or misunderstood. They may feel discouraged or believe they’re “not good at school,” when the real issue is that they haven’t been taught in a way that matches how their brain learns best. Increasing awareness helps ensure earlier identification and access to proven interventions—like the speech-to-print approach we use in our tutoring sessions.

How You Can Support Dyslexia Awareness

  • Learn: Read about the signs of dyslexia and how it presents differently from child to child.

  • Share: Talk openly about dyslexia and help challenge myths or stereotypes.

  • Advocate: Encourage schools and communities to use structured literacy programs that work for all learners.

This month—and every month—we celebrate the resilience, creativity, and determination of students with dyslexia. With the right support, every learner can thrive.

If you’d like to learn more about how our tutoring programs support students with dyslexia, reach out to schedule a consultation. Together, we can build confidence, strengthen skills, and unlock each child’s potential.
