Math Assessments for Children K - Algebra

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers, learn math facts, and perform accurate and fluent mathematical calculations. Individuals with dyscalculia may struggle with number sense, quantity comparison, basic arithmetic, math reasoning, and applying math concepts to real-world situations.

According to clinical descriptions commonly used in educational and psychological settings, dyscalculia is often characterized by difficulty understanding numerical magnitude, recognizing patterns in numbers, recalling math facts, sequencing steps in problem solving, and working efficiently with symbols and procedures. These challenges are not due to lack of instruction, motivation, or intelligence, but rather reflect underlying differences in how the brain processes numerical information.

As academic demands increase, math difficulties may become more pronounced, particularly when students are expected to work with fractions, multi-step problem solving, algebraic thinking, and mental math. Without targeted support, weaknesses in foundational math skills can impact confidence, academic performance, and everyday tasks that involve numbers.

Our comprehensive math assessments are designed to identify exactly where a student is struggling and why. The final report provides a clear breakdown of skills across key areas, including number sense, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and related foundational skills.

While this assessment is appropriate for students from Kindergarten through pre-algebra/algebra, it does not directly test algebra coursework. Instead, it identifies underlying gaps that often surface once students reach algebra. Algebra is a common point where difficulties become more noticeable, and this assessment helps pinpoint the earlier skill breakdowns contributing to those challenges.

This detailed insight allows us to target instruction precisely, select the right resources, and create a tutoring plan that supports steady, measurable progress rather than guesswork. Reports can be used to guide individualized instruction, track growth over time, and support advocacy by clearly outlining areas of strength and need.

Assessment Format & Technology

The assessment is completed across two separate 45-minute sessions and is conducted online using Canvas. Students will need access to a computer with a webcam, as well as paper and a pencil.

We intentionally begin the first session with 10–15 minutes focused on rapport-building and orientation. During this time, we get to know the student, ensure they feel comfortable, and confirm they understand how to use the online tools. This is an important part of the assessment process and helps ensure more accurate results.

Preparation & Environment

Families are encouraged to share any prior academic, behavioral, social, or emotional evaluation records ahead of time. To support focus and accuracy, we ask that siblings and pets are not present during the assessment sessions.

Cost

The cost of the math assessment is $250. Please note: Math evaluations are not covered by insurance. Reports are generally delivered to families within two weeks of the assessment.
